Originally the Kaftan came from Mesopotamia and Asia in 600 B.C. By the 13th Century, it spread through Eastern Europe, more specifically into Turkey where Kaftan became a formal wear of the Ottoman Empire Sultans and Nobles. As the Ottoman Empire expanded its territories across the Mediterranean region, so did its culture and crafts. Morocco was among the few who embraced the Kaftan couture.

But it's only the 1960's that the Kaftan style started to be popular in the West when the fashion legends Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior used the Kaftan style for their collections which led Vogue and Harper Bazaar start talking about the Kaftan.
